Overview

It is widely recognized that limitations in participation are considered the most debilitating for a majority of those with early-acquired neurological disorders. As healthcare practitioners, including physiotherapists, chiropractors, massage therapists, etc., it is important to recognize the level at which changes can be made to optimize the potential to participate.

This online physiotherapy course will challenge you to look critically at your own expectations for outcomes with pediatric and adult patients with early-acquired neurological disorders. You will learn to identify markers for neurological recovery masked by the habitual motor performance.

By understanding neuroplasticity and incorporating tactics to maximize it, there is the possibility of minimizing maladaptive habits in individuals with cerebral palsy. This can allow these individuals to make improvements they otherwise would be less likely to make. As healthcare practitioners providing care for individuals with early acquired neurological disorders, one of the largest goals is to minimize and change the progression of disability.

In this online course, a highly systematic and intensive approach to assessment and treatment will be introduced through short case presentations.

This course is for any healthcare practitioner who sees patients with cerebral palsy, including but not limited to physiotherapists (physical therapists), chiropractors, massage therapists, occupational therapists, and kinesiologists.

The instructors
Pia Stampe
PT, DPT

Pia earned her bachelor degree in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1981 and her Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from Arizona School of Health Sciences in 2008.

 In her early career in Denmark, Pia worked with children in a special education school setting, she helped start the first early intervention home based therapy program for infants in Copenhagen and she was the physical therapy director in a residential facility for young multi-handicapped adults.

In 1998 she opened Pediatric Physical Therapy Services, a private practice providing outpatient services and Early Intervention/Preschool Services. In 2009, Pediatric Physical Therapy Services merged with Step by Step to form the current company.

Pia has extensive teaching experience within the field of pediatric and neurological physical therapy and technology use. She has been teaching about Brachial Plexus Injuries and EMG Biofeedback/EMG Triggered Stimulation throughout the USA and Canada. Her teaching experience also includes courses in how to use current knowledge about neuroplasticity such as using treatment intensives to maximize patient outcomes.

Through extensive continuing education, Pia has gained expertise in assessment and treatment of children and adults with a wide variety of neurological problems. 

Over the past few years Pia and her staff have developed a unique therapy intensive  program for children and adults with conditions such as Brachial Plexus Injury, Cerebral Palsy and Brain Injury.


Mindy Silva
BSc, MScMed, PGCertHealSc
Mindy is a paediatric physiotherapist with a masters degree in child health and neurodevelopment. She is completing her PhD through the University of Otago with a focus on using available technology to support parents in managing home therapy programmes. The central theme being the integration of behaviour change science into clinical practice. Mindy maintains a part time clinical caseload and also serves on the Guidelines and Consensus Committee of the Physiotherapy New Zealand Paediatric Special Interest Group and The Clinical Reference Group for Cerebral Palsy in the New Zealand Child and Youth Clinical Network. Her passion, besides the children and families she works with, is using technology to share the experience and voice of expert clinicians with other therapists and building international clinical networks through wired On Development and The Wired Collective. Wired On Development a free podcast series that showcases clinical excellence in paediatric neuromotor rehabilitation and The Wired Collective is a premium online membership for paediatric physios and occupational therapists who use technology to increase their clinical efficiency, their academic knowledge, and their professional networks.
